🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
mi_ublock_size reads page even when the allocation failed, and the call sites leave page uninitialized.
The assertion at line 243 evaluates page unconditionally, but only the store at line 245 is guarded by p!=NULL. The four call sites declare mi_page_t* page; without an initializer (lines 252, 258, 264, 274). _mi_page_malloc_zero writes *ppage only after it obtains a block (line 53); on the out-of-memory path it forwards to _mi_malloc_generic, which returns NULL without writing *ppage. A debug build (MI_DEBUG > 0) then compares an indeterminate pointer value and can abort spuriously on an allocation failure.
Guard the assertion on p, and initialize the locals.

Restore CPython's QSBR hooks, atomic free-list accesses, debug header preservation, accurate heap visiting, and initialization/platform fixes on top of the unmodified upstream import. Use per-interpreter subprocs with safe metadata lifetime management, enable abandoned-block visiting, and disable guarded allocations. Update the source/header build lists and add regression coverage for QSBR, cross-thread frees, abandoned cycles and interpreter teardown. Document the upstream provenance and the audit of downstream patches.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Override pip configuration when installing certificates.
If a user sets global.require-virtualenv = true in a pip configuration file, unsetting these variables leaves that setting active. The certificate installer then fails outside a virtual environment. Set PIP_REQUIRE_VIRTUALENV=false after unsetting both aliases so the installer overrides the configuration file. Pip gives environment variables precedence over configuration files. (pip.pypa.io)
