Your gcc must be ancient, which version are you on? Can you try something with a decent C++11 support or maybe clang? Use CC and CXX environment variables to point to your newer compiler.
Unfortunately, I am not a CentOS guy at all, and originally wrote my node script for Windows, but my boss told me over the weekend we need to deploy it on our AWS instance, which runs CentOS, so most of what you said does not mean anything to me. Sorry. However, running yum check gcc shows the following:

I assume this is too old but there are no updates available. I am willing to try anything, however I am not sure based on your comments what to look at next. I would appreciate any clarification or steps you could provide to try out. Thank you!
Are you able to clone and build libgit2 itself? It's written in C89 so I feel like the compiler shouldn't be the problem here...
Yes, I am able to clone the libgit2 repo and then use cmake to build it by following these instructions:

I wasn't able to easily find the answer about node-gyp that @maxkorp posed.
However, what I found was that we have std=c++0x defined in our binding.gyp file.
GCC 4.4.x has experimental support of this -std=c++0x compiler flag. Of course, that's not to say that it should or shouldn't work. It's not clear to me if the stuff we use are features covered by 4.4.x or not.
GCC 4.8.1 is the first feature-complete implementation of the standard and the functionality is enabled via the -std=c++11 flag.
And lastly, our installation instructions asks for GCC 4.7+.
@bduff9 Maybe you can try installing a newer compiler into /opt or something?
The compiler flag in binding.gyp was added for PR #836 and at some point in the life of that PR it compiled "...on gcc 4.6 and clang 3.4".
I am encountering the same issue on RHEL6
I am trying to install nodegit on a CentOS box and I was getting the error about libstdc++-dev, as seen in #853. I then tried the command listed in there as working for CentOS:
BUILD_ONLY=true npm install nodegit
This fails with many more errors from openssl, which I then updated to the latest version. The output looks like:
I did see #1171, however as can be seen from the log above, I am using node v6 not v7. I would appreciate any help as I need to get this script deployed. Thank you in advance!
