    So pyexpat we already had this discussion several times in the past and there was no clear consensus on how to fix it for now:

    We document socket.SocketType as being the class of _socket.socket as well as _thread.LockType. But those objects exist at runtime.

    On the other hand, pyexpat.xmlparser does NOT exist at runtime. What exists is pyexpat.XMLParserType which is documented. The problem is now as follows:

    • Should we do like for LockType where we document the methods themselves normally?
    • Should we do like for SocketType where no methods are documented?
    • Something else?

    We document socket.socket.* because it's a subclass of SocketType (_socket.socket) but threading.Lock() returns an exact instance of LockType (_thread.lock).

    Ideally, I want to retain xmlparser.* itself to avoid breaking existing links in general. But this is still a lying interface. There is NO such class accessible from Python. The name of the class is in C. But changing it would also be annoying so I think we should rather amend docs however we can.

    I once tried to simply use XMLParserType everywhere but it would break links. It's also documented as a data type which is not ideal...
