What is Tip4Commit?
Tip4Commit is a service that collects bitcoin donations and uses them to tip developers for their commits to open source projects chosen by bitcoin donors.
What happens to unclaimed tips (if recipient doesn't sign in and specify his/her bitcoin address)?
We tip only those developers who signed in to tip4commit and contributed to the funded project. Funds that are not claimed during 30 days get returned back to the donation pool of that project.
Also there is an ongoing discussion whether it is ethical or even legal to add projects to our list without prior consent of the project maintainers. Perhaps we'll switch to opt-in as suggested in https://github.com/tip4commit/tip4commit/issues/152.
If somebody wants to reward independent contributors of random opensource project, does he or she needs a permission from project maintainers? Should project maintainers have the power over economic activities of other people?
Why do you spam people?
New answer:
We disabled email notifications. We don't create users automatically, only those who signed in to tip4commit and specified their bitcoin address will receive tips.
We send emails only to public email addresses of contributors who received tips for their contribution and only when ALL of the following conditions are met:
contributor's balance is above the threshold
contributor didn't specify his or her withdrawal address
contributor didn't unsubscribe
contributor wasn't notified during last 30 days (if contributor doesn't specify bitcoin address during 30 days, tips will be returned to donation pool anyway)
project maintainer didn't disable notification for contributors of his or her project
Email recipient can explicitly unsubscribe or just ignore the message.
If there is any victim of our spam please create a ticket at github with facts. So far most of the criticism comes from people who never got a single email from us!
