features: modify the project root directory when creating a new project #201

Description

Is it possible to add the ability to modify the root directory of a new project when creating it?
My work requires storing UnityProject in different directories based on project and date.
The current version seems to be able to store all new projects in the same set root directory.

ok yeah, that is quite a obvious missing feature : )

Currently it takes root directory for all projects

and in new project window, cannot change that folder anymore..

But I'll look into this, just needs browse button folder output folder basically (and editable output folder field)

For custom locations, my own workflow usually is:

    • after you clone your repo or create the project folder
    • then i launch UnityLauncher from Explorer Contect menu (then it asks for unity version)

    My workflow right now is:

    1. create a project folder using the Explorer, create a subfolder called Assets.
    2. add this mock Unity project in UnityLauncherPro.
    3. Open or Upgrade project :)

Hi,It seems that this feature was not automatically released by the GitHub Action CI. Could you please take a look when you have a moment? Thanks!

The new name is great. Many related tools are named starting with U or Uni.
At present, there are buttons and displays for selecting paths, but the actual project creation is still done in the global settings folder . Additionally, if a custom template file is selected during creation, the program will crash.

added those fixes, and i think still need to add few more:

    • if new project path/folder doesnt exists, it could create it
    • if "root folder for new projects" is not set in Settings panel, it could still open the new project panel (and user can set their own path for the project)

    Your are awesome @unitycoder !

    Tiny feature requests / bugs:

    • FEATURE: Browsing for the root always starts at User/{Name}/Documents for me. It would be nice if it started at the path already entered.

    • BUG: No matter what I enter as path it always appends a ".Folder" to the path (Windows 10, Build 06-10-2025 19:19:14)?

    • FEATURE: Auto folder creation for the path entered into the "Project Root Folder" would be nice. Currently the Create button gets greyed out. Or even better: grey it out but add a "[ ] Create folder at path" checkbox below that one can tick. That way it would still prevent you from accidentally creating misspelled folders but would spare users the work of going into the explorer.

Side note (question): Does it connect the project to the cloud? I usually tick that off but I don't see any option. Update -> just checked. It does not, great :-)

i dont see this on my machine, can you screenshot it or describe the exact steps?

Sure, so this is my test version:

And here is a video of the behaviour:
    https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/7bacf412-af7f-4aa6-b05e-04030efade1a

It shows how I struggle to select a path that does not end with ".Folder". I assume it is because the selection is limited to "*.Folder" for some reason. My used OS is Win 10. Entering a valid path manually works just fine.

Maybe I can find the time and look at it myself.

Thank you, your launcher has been a life saver for me (got like 100+ projects to test assets etc. which is a total nightmare to manage with the regular hub) :-)

    Ok, i see it now!

Yes that "Project.Folder" is a hack to use regular Folder Browser..
Since the default "select folder" is horrible:

Basically you shouldn't remove the "Project.Folder" dummy text in that field,
but just go into any folder you want, and leave the "Project.Folder" in that field,
then press save, to use the current folder that you are in.

I can check if there are better alternatives these days,
previously this was the only alternative https://github.com/ookii-dialogs/ookii-dialogs-wpf

Ah okay, well then I think this can be considered as "works as intended". I was just very confused when I encountered it and tried fighting it :D.
