Beginner Marvel Rivals FAQ
What do you do in Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals is a 6v6 Hero shooter, meaning that you team up with other Heroes, and battle against another team. Usually there is an objective to achieve, such as capturing points or pushing a vehicle across the map.
How do Abilities work?
Abilities are activated by pressing specific keys on your input of choice, and can cause damage to an opposing hero, heal a teammate and more. Different Heroes have themed abilites dependant on their role and history. Vanguards have more defensive Abilities, Duelist Abilities are mostly focused on damage, and Strategist Abilities are largely centered on healing or assisting your team.
What Roles/Playstyles are available in the game?
There are 3 roles available in game.
- Vanguards
- Vanguards are the walls between the enemy and your flimsier teammates. They can deal great area damage and, crucially, take a high amount of punishment. They are experts in shielding their allies.
- Duelists
- Strategists
- Strategists excel in support. Between healing teammates, enhancing them and controlling the battlefield, these Heroes play a critical role in keeping the battlefield even, or better yet, turning it in your favour.
How many of each Role should a team have?
The typical team makeup is 2 of each role. In addition, depending on the current standing of a game, it may be beneficial to switch a Vanguard to a Duelist (if you're on the offensive and want to dive in and do some major damage) or switch a Duelist to a Strategist (if you're on the defensive and want to survive longer against a focussed attack).
What types of matches are there?
There are 5 game modes:
- Domination
- Teams fight for control of a single point in the map. Teams need to capture the point and hold it. Capturing is a matter of standing on or near the point, and watching the progress bar increase. Defend the point though, as if the enemy team approaches, it will become contested and no progress is made until only one team stands on the point.
- Convoy
- One team escorts a vehicle to the required point, while the opposing team tries to stop them. When the match begins, the defending team are released first, and given the opportunity to set up defences and position themselves in time for the attacking teams release from the spawn point. Once this happens, the Attackers will try to get to the vehicle and stay on it, pushing it to the finish point within a set time displayed on their clock. Defenders can push the vehicle back if they remove all attackers from its vicinity.
- Convergence
- Convergence is a hybrid of Domination and Convoy. Its played mostly like Convoy but attackers need to capture a mission area first in order to release the vehicle, from then on, getting the vehicle to the finish and through multiple checkpoints is the objective.
- Doom Match
- Doom Match is an Arcade mode, an 8-12 player free for all Deathmatch. Players should eliminate 16 enemies or score the most points before time runs out. The top half of the players in the match win, with an MVP crowned at the end (the top player).
- Conquest
- Conquest is Team Deathmatch. Players are split into teams and set against each other. Try to score as many eliminations as possible while avoiding being taken down. Enemies drop coins on elimination that provide the points, so be sure to collect these when possible.
