When Avengers fans assemble in cinemas later this year they may want to bring a pillow after Marvel studios revealed the extraordinary running time of the next movie.

Avengers: Doomsday, the fifth in the superhero team-up series, features the return of Robert Downey Jr. and opens globally on December 18 and will be one of the longest movies yet in the studio's franchise history.

Previous Avengers films have been long with the 2012 original clocking in at 2 hours and 23 minutes (143 minutes) while Avengers: Infinity War (2018) required an XXXL popcorn tube with its 2 hours and 29 minutes (149 minutes) run time.

Doomsday beats those films with a scheduled length of 165 minutes (two hours and 45 minutes), which might require more than one toilet break.

However, that is is shorter than Avengers: Endgame which tipped over the three hour mark in 2019 at 181 minutes.

The new films final cut could change as there are still months to go, but it's unlikly to change by much as the studio is already about to sell tickets to screenings.

Despite being five months away Marvel has announced that domestic tickets for the sequel will go on sale July 20 in the US which should mean other countries will follow suit. Time to get the diary out.

In the US Infinity Vision theatres a certification program launched by Disney for Premium Large Format (PLF) cinemas - will be showing the film after Warner Bros struck a deal with Imax cinemas for box office rival Dune Part III for three weeks.

Previous Avengers movies have made billions at the box office with Avengers: Endgame being the second-highest grossing movie of all time ($2.8 billion globally), behind Avatar.

Marvel president Kevin Fiege revealed the first artwork for the new Doomsday movie recently, showing the first look at Robert Downey's Jr's Dr Doom mask.

It also features fresh looks at Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and more.

An official trailer is tipped to be released at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25.

This latest Marvel epic is expected to serve as the opening chapter of the MCU's Multiverse Saga conclusion, leading into Avengers Secret Wars.

Based on the most recent rumoured plot details, Doomsday will essentially function as Avengers Endgame 2 and will explore the ramifications of the superhero squad's timeline tampering.

Marvel insider Main Middle Man reveals: "From what I've heard all the time travel changes that the Avengers from the sacred timeline made in Endgame had consequences for the multiverse. This resulted in incursions, failed universes and chaos in the multiverse."
