A man who drove his car into Liverpool fans leaving over 100 injured has appeared in court to be sentenced today (December 15). Paul Doyle, 54, admitted 31 offences relating to the crash, which happened when he ploughed into crowds of fans making their way back from the citys waterfront after the Premier League victory celebration.

Merseyside Police said Doyles seven minutes of dangerous driving on May 26 led to his car colliding with 100 men, women and children, causing serious injuries and trapping people underneath his Ford Galaxy Titanium, and it was only by sheer luck no-one was killed.

Liverpool Crown Court has been shown footage from dashcam and mobile phones, that caused people to gasp as Doyle was seen in tears on several occasions.

'Every time I see a Ford Galaxy, the incident replays in my mind'

Another impact statement from Simon Nash, aged 53, said he feels "feel lucky to still be here" as he spoke of the ongoing problems the horror has caused him.

His statement read out in court said: "Physically, the pain was immediate and severe. Breathing and moving were difficult because of the rib fractures. It was extremely painful to lie down; I had to sleep sitting upright for two weeks. My head injury left me dazed and frightened.

"Emotionally, this experience has been deeply distressing for myself and my family. I was with my wife and son at the time of the incident. We were separated when I was hit by the car. They couldnt find me immediately after because of all the commotion. It wasnt until two and a half hours later when my wife finally located me at the hospital with a police officer that they knew what had happened to me and I got confirmation they were safe.

"I often replay the moments in my mind the sound, the shock and fear. I feel a loss of confidence and safety in situations that never used to bother me. Every time I see a Ford Galaxy, the incident replays in my mind.

"The impact on my life has been wide ranging, I had to take a couple of months off work to recover, which caused financial strain and added stress. I played football weekly but havent managed to play since the incident due to the worsening pain in my hip and an injury to the shoulder I landed on. The ongoing physiotherapy appointments and shoulder pain are a constant reminder of what happened.

"The day could have ended a lot differently. I feel lucky to still be here."

It continued: "I don't understand why the man in the car has done this to me and my mum."

'Only sheer luck that nobody was killed'

Merseyside Police's senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector John Fitzgerald spoke following Doyle's conviction.

He said: "Thousands of people had gathered in the city to watch the Liverpool FC parade, and it is only by sheer luck that nobody was killed because of Doyle's reckless actions. In just seven minutes, his dangerous driving meant that his car collided with more than 100 people, including children, in some cases, trapping people underneath and causing serious injuries.

"The exceptional work of the emergency services including police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, the North West Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard should be recognised as they came to the aid of victims, extracting four people from underneath Doyles car and treating a number of others. We know that a lot of people are still recovering from the injuries they suffered on that day, and our thoughts remain with them and those that continue to be affected.

"Doyle was quickly apprehended by officers at the scene and has been in custody since, and we have been working closely with our colleagues at the Crown Prosecution Service ahead of the trial. We hope that the knowledge Doyle is now facing a considerable prison sentence will be able to help those affected to move on with their lives."

Paramedic 'sent flying'

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the sentencing of Paul Doyle.

The 54-year-old will appear for sentencing on Monday and Tuesday in relation to 31 offences at the Liverpool FC parade in May.

Proceedings are expected to begin in courtroom 41 from 10.30am.

Earlier today, we reported how a paramedic who was injured when Doyle drove his car into a crowd of football fans in Liverpool city centre recounted how he disregarded his own injuries to assist those caught up in the pandemonium.

Jay Vernon wasn't scheduled to be on duty at Water Street when Doyle ploughed his car into celebrating Liverpool FC fans following their club's title win last May.

The 34-year-old from Aigburth had been working as a cycle response lead, tasked with manoeuvring pedal bikes equipped with ambulance kit around the parade event in the city centre. However, within hours, he found himself embroiled in harrowing scenes as Doyle drove his Ford Galaxy into the throng.
