Ricky Hatton wanted his epitaph to read: I hope we go to a better place. The tragic boxing icon made the admission in one of his final ever interviews, given to the Daily Star Sunday.
Hatton, who was laid to rest at a funeral on Friday attended by scores of rock, TV, and sports stars, opened up about his feelings about the afterlife in a typically frank chat about the horrific lows and stupendous highs of his boxing career and stormy personal life.
He told the Daily Star when asked months before his death what he would like to see as his epitaph: I dont know I think when we die its not over and we have a soul. I would like to see, I hope we go to a better place as my epitaph.
Ricky added he also wanted his grave message to state: I was a good person and a good dad.
When asked to detail his greatest regrets, Ricky said he would like to have shed his inner beast, which he compared to the torments fellow boxing titan Mike Tyson has claimed haunt him. He also said: I dont like the time I spent away from my family.
Ricky was referring to how his rollercoaster life saw him cut off all contact with his parents Ray and Carol for eight years.
The feud came after he discovered his father had stashed a fortune of his boxing cash in an account he told his son nothing about.
He also had a tragic falling out with his best pal and father figure trainer Billy The Preacher Graham. He took the Hattons to court for allegedly withholding wages ending in a 1.4million settlement.
But Ricky insisted in his tell-all chat with the Star: I dont think theres anything Id have changed about my life except maybe the drink and the drugs.
He confessed during the chat he sank a staggering 20 pints of Guinness a day plus spirits in the saddest depths of his suicidal cocaine-fuelled boozing binges.
On what would have been his fathers 47th birthday last Monday, Rickys boy Campbell took to Instagram to post a heartbreaking tribute to his tormented dad.
Sharing a photo of the pair sharing a hug, he wrote: Happy birthday (blue heart emoji.) Wish we was spending it together x.
