UK weather forecast: Snow to strike today as Met Office in Arctic freeze warning

A yellow weather warning for ice and snow is in place for almost all of the west and south of Scotland and Northern Ireland, the north of England and much of Wales and the Midlands

BBC weather: UK to be hit by blizzard of snow and sleet

The Met Office has issued three days of weather warnings as snow blankets many parts of the UK.


A yellow warning is in place today covering all of the west and south of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the north of England, the north of Wales and parts of the Midlands.


The Met Office has issued a separate snow warning this morning for the south of Wales, parts of the southeast and East Anglia.


Roads and railways are likely to be affected, with icy patches expected on untreated roads.

There are also yellow weather warnings forecast for Friday and Saturday for parts of Wales and the north of England.

Forecasters say up to 5cm of snow could fall in some areas.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: "It looks like a 'White Thursday' for parts of the South and Midlands, with disruption in the morning rush-hour.

A Met Office spokesman Luke Miall added: "After a snow-free winter for many, some places could finally get their first sighting of the white stuff."

He added: "It will be the coldest spell we've seen this winter across all areas."

BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor has warned that the next two days could see at least 50ml of rain in parts of the UK.


He said: "Further rain and snow this weekend will only add to the water going into the river system.

"Snow is forecast for some of you today, in fact. It's a complicated weather story across the country today, a mixture of rain, sleet and snow for some.


"It eases out a little bit later in the day though as we see a bit of sunshine."

He continued: "We've got some pretty cold air in place across the country at the moment.

"This weather system is working across the south, bringing mainly rain for some.

"It tips its way into the colder air and we'll see more of that turn to snow. It will chiefly be over the hills but increasingly spreading later."

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: "Snow falling just before morning rush-hour is the worst possible time. Don't be caught out by the first proper taste of winter for a year in the South."
