Domino's has unveiled 'Domidog' - a robotic canine designed to safely deliver pizzas to beachgoers, offering protection against the notorious seagulls known for swooping down on food at seaside locations. While this pizza-delivering pup won't be replacing traditional drivers, the prototype is set to make its debut this summer.
The creation of this entertaining robot dog was inspired by research that ranked seagulls among the top 10 nuisances for Brits at the beach. The survey of 1,500 beach visitors also highlighted other grievances such as limited toilets (40 percent), large crowds (37 percent), and uncontrolled dogs off their leads (17 percent).
One in three respondents confessed to having their food snatched by the birds and most wished for an easy solution to safeguard their snacks during their seaside visits.
Izzy Gardener from Domino's commented: "Seagulls have claimed too many seaside snacks, and it's time we did something about it.
"We're always exploring new and innovative ways to keep your pizza as hot and fresh as possible on its delivery journey. That's why we're trailing Domidog this summer: a tech-driven answer to an age-old beach problem."
Before being repurposed as a pizza protector, the Boston Dynamics robot had demonstrated its capabilities in various fields, including search and rescue operations, assisting bomb squads, and advancing human-robot interaction research.
Now, it's embarking on a new mission - defending your pizza from airborne snack thieves.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, this innovative device can expertly navigate its surroundings using built-in sensors, stereo cameras, and sophisticated localisation technology.
Additional features, such as 360-degree perception, enable it to seamlessly avoid obstacles while making deliveries.
According to the research, the top grievances with these pesky seagulls include stealing food (61 percent), aggressive behaviour (50 percent), and, in some cases, causing property damage (10 percent) or frightening small children (19 percent), as revealed by OnePoll.com data.
Izzy Gardener from Domino's commented: "Thanks to this prototype, seaside visitors will have a sure-fire way to keep slices safe and secure at the seaside without them heading off into the sky."
