Massive place gets new name as Google bows down to Donald Trump - but not everywhere

In efforts to remain 'consistent' with 'longstanding practices' Google has adopted a geographical name change that Donald Trump believes will restore pride in America

Google has renamed a major geographical region in a kowtowing gesture to one of Donald Trump s bizarre wants.

US database Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the USs offical information bank on the States geographical features, officially updated the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America - the name change being just one of the orange man babys weird presidential ideas.

Tech powerhouse Google then announced that it will reflect this name update on its Maps app, so it was consistent with the companys longstanding practices, however, the name change wont be visible to everyone. For States-side app users, the Gulf of Mexico will appear as the Gulf of America.

In Mexico the body of water that stretched from Florida through to Texas and into Mexico, will remain as the Gulf of Mexico. For Maps users elsewhere in the world, the oceanic basin will be referred to as the Gulf of Mexico, with the Gulf of America following in brackets.

As Google explains, names of geographical features such as countries and bodies of water are based on the users country location, as determined by the phones operating system, the SIM, network and location. When using Google Maps on a web browser, geographical names are based on the region selected in the search settings or on the devices location.

Donald Trump announced the idea of the name change in January this year, as part of efforts to restore American pride, with an executive order directing federal agencies to use the new name going out as first call of business once in office on January 20, 2025.

On February 12, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said: It is a fact that the body of water off the coast of Louisiana is called the Gulf of America.

Its very important to this administration that we get that right, not just for people here at home, but also for the rest of the world.

Shortly after Trump signed the executive order, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the president could use whatever name he wants, adding: For us, it is still the gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world, it is still the gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf of Mexico has been called just that for more than four centuries.

Apple Maps has also changed the body of water to Gulf of America on some browsers.
