'Manga Nostradamus' made bold 2025 tsunami prediction and it happened

Huge waves pounded countries around the Pacific earlier this week as the sixth largest earthquake in history was felt near Russia - but one bizarre prediction came true

A manga series eerily predicted the tsunamis caused by the earthquake near Russia last week. After the earthquake that hit close to Russia's Kamchatka peninsula early on Wednesday morning (July 30), powerful waves spread across the Pacific.

Several countries were put on high alert as some waves were seen reaching as high as 5 metres in height, though the eventual scale of damage was lower than expected. But while the world had their eyes glued to their televisions for the latest updates, other people resorted to the Internet.

This is due to the fact that a manga from years ago bizarrely predicted how this year's earthquake and tsunamis would go. Search results in China for the word "prophecy" spiked during the course of the day, as over one million raced online to discover if the tsunami had been predicted previously. They eventually found that it had been, in a manga that was written four years ago.

Manga artist Ryo Tatsuki strangely predicted a major natural disaster in her piece "The Future I Saw", released in 1999. In the book at the time, she predicted that a major disaster would rock the nation - and she was eventually proven right, after a huge earthquake and subsequent tsunamis pounded Japan in the biggest disaster in decades.

The final and "complete" version of the book was officially released in 2021. In the final version of the story, Tatsuki predicted that another disaster would take place in July of 2025 and, with one day to go until the prediction would be off, a major earthquake struck not far from Japan.

As a result, a flurry of memes and debates across Asia on Tatsuki's psychic abilities, and - while the manga is incredibly popular since its full publication in 2021 - the manga had left fans wondering if the view into the future would come true.

Several manga fans did everything they could to avoid a potential disaster, going as far as to cancel their trips to Japan for July in case of a catastrophe. But after her predictions came true, several manga fans could not believe that Tatsuki had been right for the second time in a row.

Speaking to CNN, Andrea Wang - a traveller from China - admitted the clairvoyant's predictions had spooked her, saying the manga had made her "concerned about the risk to my life". As a result, she had cancelled a trip to Japan in April and explained that she would not be travelling to Japan for the rest of the year.

However, while many manga fans are now hailing Tatsuki as a modern-day Nostradamus, Tatsuki herself has warned against believing in the predictions and taking them as serious warnings. Pleading with readers, she explained in an interview with local media in May that she is asking people not to be "overly swayed" by her predictions.

Currently, it is impossible to know in advance where an earthquake is going to strike, as there is no reliable system in place to detect seismic activity ahead of time. However, scientists have urged people against the belief of these types of predictions, as they can always be false.
