Ukrainian soldiers tie the knot on the front line as fellow troops sing and toast couple

The dangerous situation in Kyiv didn't stop love birds Lesya and Valeriy from tying the knot surrounded by their singing comrades - and with a glass of champagne in hand

Despite a hail of bombs and gunfire, love prevailed at the frontline in Kyiv in Ukraine when two civilian soldiers tied the knot, serenaded by their fellow troops with Vitali Klitschko also in attendance.

Reporters at the scene said that the happy couple are Lesya and Valeriy, members of Ukraine's Territorial Defence Force, which according to Politico is a branch of the military made up of civilian reservists used to bolster the main army.

In beautiful footage from the battlefield ceremony on March 6, the couple are serenaded with a traditional instrument and accompanying soldier crooners.

Klitschko, mayor of Kyiv and former world heavyweight boxing champion, visited the area and congratulated the duo.

Sharing a video of the heartwarming moment on Twitter, Klitschko posted: "Today I greeted the soldiers of one of the battalions of the capital's defence of the capital Lesya and Valeri.

"They have been living in a civil marriage for a long time, and now they have decided to get married. The ceremony took place next to one of the checkpoints. Life goes on!

"And we will protect the life of Kyiv, Kyivites, our state!"

Lesya, veil and all, can be seen holding a bouquet of flowers as both her and Valeriy clutch champagne flutes.

Their wedding came on day 11 of Putin's insurgency into Ukraine. Russian forces are said to have lost 1,000 soldiers per day on average.

On Saturday March 5, Russia declared a ceasefire in Ukraine from 10am Moscow time to allow innocent civilians to escape the conflict from Mariupol and Volnovakha.

Russian officials had also claimed that Ukraine's military agreed to the ceasefire.

This follows news that more than 1.3 million Ukrainian's have fled their homes since Vladimir Putin's troops launched an invasion last week.

The European Union has estimated that some four million may try to leave the war-torn country, and has vowed to welcome them with "open arms".

The majority of refugees have crossed westward into neighbouring countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.

There had been fears that violence against civilians was becoming more common as Putin grew frustrated with his army's lack of progress.

Thus far, the conflict hasn't been going exactly as he planned. Only on Thursday morning did they capture their first major city, Kherson in the south near to Crimea.

Attacks on Ukraine's two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, have been resisted so far.
