David Beckham has leapt to wife Victoria's defence after the former Spice Girl was playfully called out online for her low-key reaction during England's World Cup clash.

The Beckhams were among the famous faces cheering on the Three Lions during last weekend's quarter-final showdown, but it was Victoria's composed expression that caught the attention of one eagle-eyed fan.

Sharing a clip of the couple watching the match, comedian Jenny Johnson jokingly suggested Victoria wasn't quite matching the excitement of the rest of the nation. She captioned a snap of them both at the game on Instagram: "I wanted to take a moment to single out @england's number one fan Victoria, Lady Beckham!!!!"

"There's nothing like cheering your heart out for England from home, then they cut to Victoria and we see that classic Posh Spice smile! It's so infectious!

"I used to think I got animated while watching sports, but Victoria blows my enthusiasm out of the water! Each time I see her I shout, 'SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!!!!' because her energy is electric!!! See for yourself!"

The tongue-in-cheek post quickly gained attention, with many fans finding the joke hilarious as Victoria maintained her trademark cool while cameras captured the couple.

But David couldn't resist stepping in to defend his wife. Replying directly beneath the post, the former England captain insisted Victoria was every bit as invested in the action as he was.

He wrote: "She was celebrating inside I promise. Her reactions were slightly slower than mine."

David's light-hearted response delighted fans, with many praising the football legend for joining in with the joke rather than taking offence.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star has long been one of England's most passionate supporters, having captained his country on 59 occasions during an international career that spanned more than a decade.

Meanwhile, Victoria has often been by his side throughout his football journey, supporting him from the stands during some of the biggest moments of his career.
