I stumbled across an unusual sight opposite Canary Wharf station today (August 10), a menacing dinosaur seemingly waiting for its next photo opportunity.
But this wasn't some kind of prehistoric invasion... Instead, it was an incredible 3D artwork created to celebrate the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures film The End of Oak Street, which hits UK cinemas this Friday (August 14). The huge installation has transformed Montgomery Square into a bizarre prehistoric world, and naturally, I had to go and see what all the fuss was about.
Created by award-winning 3D artists Joe and Max, the artwork measures more than 1,200 square feet and is designed to give visitors a taste of the film's wild premise. The End of Oak Street follows a family whose quiet 1980s suburban neighbourhood is ripped from its familiar surroundings by a mysterious cosmic event and transported into the prehistoric age, complete with hungry dinosaurs.
From the moment I stepped into the experience, I was greeted by dramatic clouds of mist which immediately made me feel as though I'd wandered straight into Jurassic territory.
The artwork itself is seriously impressive, with a half-destroyed black cab and sliced-up telephone box appearing to have been caught in the middle of the mysterious event.
Visitors can also grab costume and prop elements inspired by the film's 1980s setting before stepping into the artwork for their own photos.
I enthusiastically got involved, posing among the wreckage and attempting to channel the film's stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.
My acting skills were definitely tested... particularly when I was encouraged to pose as though I was falling into the prehistoric chaos. By the end, I'd apparently mastered the art of looking like I was being dramatically swallowed by another dimension a skill I'm sure will come in handy one day.
After surviving my brush with the dinosaur age, I was rewarded with a slice of pizza, inspired by Ewan McGregor's character Greg, who works as a pizza delivery driver in the film.
Artist Joe Hill said: "As a 3D artist and huge dinosaur enthusiast, this brief couldnt have been more exciting. The End of Oak Street is a thrilling and hugely inventive edge-of-your-seat experience and weve tried to reflect that in this immense immersive art display.
"Its been great incorporating the 3D elements and seeing people pose within the artwork today has been a joy to behold."
The installation was created over several weeks using acrylic paint on canvas, with the main artwork measuring 14 metres by eight metres before the additional 3D elements were added.
3D Joe and Max are renowned for their anamorphic artworks, having created installations around the world and even broken Guinness World Records for the world's largest and longest anamorphic artwork.
The Canary Wharf experience is open from 12pm to 7pm on Monday August 10 and Tuesday August 11, with pizza available from midday while stocks last.
And if my visit was anything to go by, it is a pretty spectacular way to get a glimpse of the strange world awaiting audiences when The End of Oak Street, arrives in cinemas on August 14.
