The feud between Ruben Amorim and Marcus Rashford took another ugly turn when the Man Utd manager claimed hed rather put the clubs 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vital, on the bench over the forward.

Rashfords continued absence has been a hot topic around Old Trafford and speaking after Uniteds 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday night, Amorim explained why the 27-year-old continues to be excluded. Amorim said: Its always the same reason. The reason is the training, the way I see what a footballer should do. In training, in life and its every day, every detail. So if things dont change, I will not change.

Its the same situation for every player. If you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player. I will put Vital on the bench before I put a player that doesnt give the maximum every day, so I will not change in that.

As far as insults go, Amorims comment is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the years, the beloved sport has seen some wild comments being hurled in public.

Heres a round-up of some of the most amusing verbal attacks in the sports history:

Brian Clough and David Beckham

Cloughs insults have always been iconic, but his jibes against Beckham have carved their place in history and live long in the memory. Speaking about the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and England midfielder, Clough famously said of Beckham and his wife, Victoria: His wife can't sing and his barber can't cut hair.

He seemed to have a long-standing issue with Beckhams tresses, calling his Mohican haircut a downright insult to one of the most prestigious posts in sport".

Ron Atkinson on Carlton Palmer

English football manager, former footballer and television pundit Carlton Palmer, was something of a journeyman during his footie career and despite making 18 appearances for England and winning the League Cup, he was often the butt of jokes.

Former West Brom manager Ron Atkinson, or Big Ron, once famously commented on Palmer's lack of control, saying: He can trap a ball further than I can kick it.

And it seems Big Ron wasnt the only one with some less than complimentary things to say about Palmer. Former Southampton manager Dave Jones also had a few choice words for the ex-footballer and his sports prowess.

Commenting on Palmers skill, Jones famously said: He covers every blade of grass, but that's only because his first touch is crap.

Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy

Regarded as one of the Premier League's most iconic midfielders, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane famously had words with his ex Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy. McCarthy had accused Keane of faking injury during a play-off game against Iran and challenged him in front of his teammates. Keane had then famously hit back with an expletive-laden comeback before ditching his country ahead of the 2002 World Cup due to his fallout with McCarthy.

He said: "Mick, you're a liar... you're a [bleep]ing w*****. I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a [bleep]ing w***** and you can stick your World Cup up your a***. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country and you're not even Irish, you English c***. You can stick it up your b******s."

El-Hadji Diouf v Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher

In 2016, former Senegalese footballer El-Hadji Diouf went on a scathing tirade against his ex-Liverpool teammates Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard. Speaking to French magazine So Foot, Diouf said of Carragher: "The difference between Jamie and me is that I'm a world-class player and he's a s***. The type of s*** who's going to produce a book in which I'll be mentioned again. Me, in my book, he'll only be entitled to one sentence: He's a [bleep]ing loser."

In another one of his verbal attacks against Carragher, Diouf said: "If he (Carragher) wasn't a Scouser, he was never going to play football in his life. I'm sorry for him. I only have this to say for him."

Steven Gerrard wasnt able to escape Dioufs wrath either. In 2017, the winger said: "I am Mr El-Hadji Diouf, Mr Senegal but he is Mr Liverpool and Senegal is bigger than Liverpool and he has to know that."

He also said Gerrard downright killed his team by slipping against Chelsea, adding: "If Liverpool has never won the Premier League, it's no accident. What goes around, comes around."

George Best on David Beckham

As far as picking the right moment goes, Beckhams predecessor in the Manchester United No. 7 jersey, George Best, picked the very worst one. During a World Player of the Year awards ceremony in Brussels, Belfast-born Best delivered a scathing remark about Becks.

In 2000, Best said: "Beckham didn't deserve to be elected best player in the world. When he can do something else apart from cross perhaps he will. He (Beckham) cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right.

Graeme Souness and Paul Pogba

Writing in his column for The Sunday Times in September 2018, Graeme Souness said of Frenchman Paul Pogba: "Pogba plays for himself, its all about how cool he looks, showing us how clever he is.

Speaking of his 86 million price tag in a United shirt, Souness continued: "I reckon Pogbas only in the team to maintain his transfer value until United can sell him, because he doesnt merit his place for any other reason. Perhaps were now seeing the selfish player Fergie didnt fancy the first time round?"

Nigel Pearson

Following Chelsea's 3-1 win at the King Power Stadium in 2015, former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson called a journalist an "ostrich", "stupid" and "daft" in a bizarre post-match news conference.

Speaking to journalist Ian Baker of Wardles Press Agency, Pearson hit back with the now famous retort and said: I think you must have been either head in the clouds or away on holiday or reporting on a different team because if you dont know the answer to that question your question is absolutely unbelievable the fact you do not understand where I am coming from.

Nigel Pearson's iconic rant from 2015 saw him accuse one journalist of being an "Ostrich"(Image: ESPN YouTube)

"If you dont know the answer to that question then I think you are an ostrich. Your head must be in the sand. Is your head in the sand? Are you flexible enough to get your head in the sand? My suspicion would be no.
