Valentino Rossi cheats death as MotoGP bike hurtles towards his head in horror crash

The Italian legend was just inches from disaster as a bike effectively bounced over his head during the Austrian Grand Prix

Valentino Rossi was inches from potential life changing injuries after a horrific incident in MotoGP's Austrian Grand Prix.

The bikes of Johan Zarco and Franco Morbidelli went hurtling towards the Italian legend after a crash at the Red Bull Ring.

Incredibly, one bike flew in front of Rossi and the other behind.

Given the speed of the bikes, any impact could have caused life changing injuries to Rossi.

The race was immediately red-flagged and Rossi was left with his head in his hands.

Pictures showed Rossi inside the pits in shock, as he realised that he missed out on disaster.

Morbidelli and Zarco both walked away from the incident from their initial high speed tangle, but will be checked over by medical staff.

Incredibly, Rossi showed his resolve by jumping straight back onto his bike to continue with the Austrian Grand Prix once the red flag was ended.

Just how close he was to disaster was showed in replays from the back of Maverick Vinales' bike, as Morbidelli's bike flew between the pair.

Questions will now be raised about the suitability of the Red Bull Ring to host MotoGP races in the coming years, following the second serious incident of the day.

The Moto2 race was marred by a horrendous crash, but thankfully without serious injuries.

Moto2 championship leader Enea Bastianini went down but his wayward bike was left on track and unavoidable for the bikes speeding towards it.

Hafizh Syahrin took the worst of the hit, with his bike being sent flying into the air.

Andi Farid Izdihar and Edgar Pons were both also involved in the terrifying accident.
