The Daily Star: News with a Wink

Voice actor teases popular Assassin's Creed game remake but 'can't say anything'

The long-rumoured Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake could be free-running into our lives soon as the voice actor behind its protagonist, Edward Kenway, has given a not-so-cryptic hint

Ready to head back to sea?

Voice actors, eh? While we're still waiting to find out what John Marston and Arthur Morgan's voice actors are so excited about with regards to Red Dead Redemption, another performer has given a not-so-subtle hint at a new Assassin's Creed title.

While Assassin's Creed: Shadows was a fantastic open-world adventure from earlier this year (and an expansion is still on the way), rumours have swirled for years about a potential remake of the fourth mainline instalment, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

The 2013 title is well-regarded among fans, ditching Assassin's Creed III's more dour protagonist, Conor, and letting us loose as pirates on the open sea. Now, it appears that the remake is not only real, but could be sailing into port sooner than expected, thanks to comments from the game's lead voice actor.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), a clip has emerged of Edward Kenway's voice actor, Matt Ryan, speaking at a convention.

The star, who has also appeared as John Constantine in various DC Comics projects, asks a fan if they've beaten the game (Black Flag).

Have you beat the game? Well, you may have to beat it again," he says, before adding, Theres a reason I say that but I cant say anything."

The game was a drastic (and welcome) tonal shift for the series

Two years ago, reports had suggested Ubisoft would look to modernise the popular entry, and it would be developed between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Singapore, with the latter developing Skull and Bones which was heavily inspired by Black Flag's naval combat.

While that game wasn't particularly well-received, the combat was enjoyable, and the water physics looked amazing.

Another report suggested the game was due to launch in 2025, but that the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows from 2024 into this year may have changed those plans.

Not checked out Black Flag yet? The original version's Gold Edition (which includes a whole host of DLC) is just over a tenner in the Steam Summer Sale 2025.

In our review of the most recent game, Shadows, we said:

"Simply put, Assassins Creed: Shadows is the biggest game in the long-running series, but also one of the finest. From its gameplay variety to its gorgeous open world, its the first game in the franchise to truly grab me in its vice grip since Origins."

"And, like Bayeks adventure, I think I'll find myself thinking about it for a long, long time afterward."
