Diablo 4 teased an IP crossover on its roadmap of seasonal content, and fans were surprised when it was later revealed to be with Berserk, an iconic manga series.
As part of our lengthy interview series with Colin Finer, Design Director for Systems and Deric Nunez, Lead Seasons Designer for Season 8, we asked about what made Berserk the right fit for Diablo's dark fantasy world.
As it turns out, the two aren't so dissimilar after all, as you can see from the stunning animated trailer below. Here's all we learned from our conversation with the Diablo 4 Season 8 team.
"It's our first IP collab, and we didn't want it to just be some random IP that didn't fit in the Diablo universe, right?" Finer explains.
"So what better way to sort of sign up with Berserk? It's very dark, it's very metal, and also really dabbles in the nuances between good and evil.
"Like it's really grey and muddy and that just fits so perfectly in Diablo that it was just impossible to pass up. When we think about all the different IP that we could collaborate with, Berserk was just number one. The team loved it right off the bat."
"Really, it's doing justice to the Berserk IP as well as Diablo. We don't want to hurt the IP of Diablo, so we felt that Berserk was just a perfect match."
As for what's included, fans can expect Iconic Armor in the in-game shop, available from May 6 to June 3.
Included are the Berserker Armor for Barbaraians, the Hawk of Light for Rogues, the Struggler for Rogues, and The Skull Knight for Necromancers. There's also a pet bundle and mount armour, as well as a new Twitch Drop.
Blizzard's blog post says: "To celebrate the collision of Diablo IV and Kentaro Miuras Berserk, we will have a Support a Streamer initiative for the Skull Behelit Mount Trophy," with more information to follow in future.
