GTA 6 could be so enormous it comes in two parts, insider claims

One longtime Rockstar insider has suggested GTA 6 could see two different options for players, with a full version including both parts and a separate GTA Online purchase

Boo! We didn't get any GTA 6 trailer like some fans had predicted, but after one retailer supposedly revealed the game's release date yesterday, another report has big ramifications for the upcoming title.

Over on the GTA Forums, longtime Rockstar reporter Tez2 has been discussing the potential of GTA 6 launching in not one but two versions (whenever it does launch, that is).

Responding to the discussion about the game's pricing, Tez2 suggested that GTA Online could be sold separately for GTA 6, the first time Rockstar has offered the opportunity to buy the online portion of one of its titles piecemeal.

Could GTA 6 be formed of two parts?

"R*/T2 already sell GTAO & RDO separately, but VI will be the first game where online is sold separately at launch, while story mode will be part of the full package that covers both," Tez2 posted.

"They will have to factor the online standalone price into the total cost. What portion of the base price will be the online's price? And what would be the story mode upgrade price for those who've bought the online standalone?"

"T2 could benefit by pricing the online standalone lower, making it accessible for those who can't afford the $70 or $80 price. Eventually, those players will upgrade to access the story mode, so that's a win-win for them."

"This also opens an opportunity, some players may be eager to access the story mode but can't afford the upgrade price too. That's when they could slide in GTA+, and offer Game Pass-like access. They'll net extra profits from players who keep subscribing instead of saving for the upgrade. Another win-win for T2.

"The win for us is if the online standalone is priced as low as it can be and factored into the total cost, the game could be sold at the standard $70 instead of a higher price."

Predicting Rockstar Games is a tricky thing to do, and its true that GTA 6 is facing anticipation that's higher than, well, just about any entertainment release in years.

At present, players can buy GTA 5 or GTA Online, with the former including the latter. If Rockstar does go down that route, it would help grow its online player base with fans that aren't able to afford the higher launch pricing of $70, while also nudging fans to upgrade if they want the full experience.

It's also unclear whether Tenz2 is speaking from personal knowledge of the game, or just speculating, but the idea of players being able to jump into GTA Online for a lower price is definitely possible.

We'll likely find out more in just a few weeks, as Rockstar's parent company holds its earnings call in February.
