GTA 6 rival MindsEye launches with major issues as fans slam 'uncooked, half-baked mess'

Former Rockstar Games dev Leslie Benzies' new game has launched to disappointing reviews thanks to an array of bugs throughout the experience which are making it tough for players to enjoy

Grand Theft Auto 6 is now coming in 2026, and while we had hoped MindsEye would make that wait a little easier, it's not looking likely.

The game, which is the first from new studio Build A Rocket Boy, is helmed by Leslie Benzies. Given Benzies' history as the lead developer of Rockstar Games' seminal GTA 5, GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption, we thought its mix of open-world driving and shooting and a tech thriller narrative would be a slam dunk.

Sadly, that's simply not the case. We'll have our review later this week, but as things stand, the game has mostly negative reviews on Steam owing to technical issues. Sadly, that's not its only problem, either.

"MindsEye is easily the worst game I have played since Hellgate: London. Is is an uncooked, half-baked mess with great cutscenes, interrupted by lacklustre game play that is stale and uninteresting," one review explains.

"The missions are haphazardly designed, the firefights are unsatifying and sloppy, None of the content is curated, it's a shake-and-bake mess created in a build-a-bear designer that feels a decade old. Save yourself from this - I still hope that the game will be unlisted and the money refunded."

"MindsEye has to be one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in a video game in quite some time," another says.

"This game has the skeleton of a fun, third person action shooter adventure with a intriguing story line that will keep you interested. The problem is... none of this is ever fully realized. Literally nothing of it."

Sony has reportedly begun refunding users who bought the game on PS5, in a situation eerily reminiscent of Cyberpunk 2077's initial PS4 release which saw the game delisted.

While CD Projekt's RPG turned things around, it sounds as though MindsEye's issues run a little deeper than technical issues.

In our time with the game, enemies will teleport behind cover, walk through it, or just stand there and let you shoot them. The open world is pretty empty, and there are only a handful of chances to actually explore it, too.

i will say, however, that while many players have reported massive frame rate drops, I found it to be pretty playable on an RTX 4070 TI and RTX 5080.

For more on GTA 6, check out how the game will reportedly include features like male strippers, as well as one big feature from Red Dead Redemption 2 that fans want to see brought back.
