The charming city of Porto in Portugal, known for its picturesque streets and tiled buildings, has been named one of the best in Europe to visit. With flights costing less than 13 a feat I managed to beat on my own 12 trip to Porto it's a perfect budget-friendly getaway for Brits.
Every year, 3.7 million people visit Porto, drawn by its coastal location, sandy beaches, and vibrant city centre filled with eateries and shops. It's easy to see why this beautiful city is a favourite among British tourists seeking a mix of culture and relaxation.
Ryanair is offering bargain flights to Porto from just 12.99, and with the new Jet2 route from Manchester launching this year, there are plenty of travel options for holidaymakers. The city, which is Portugal's second largest and home to 1.7million people, was dubbed "The City to Visit This Year" by Forbes in 2017.

Grand details like the Pink Palace in the World of Wine (WOW) building, with its rose wine-themed rooms, add to its appeal. Made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, Porto's scenic streets are perfect to explore on foot during a weekend break. You can stroll along the Douro River in the evening or sample the area's famous Port Wine at one of its many bars and restaurants. In addition to its historic downtown, it also scored the title of Europe's Leading City Break Destination in 2020.
There's no denying the picturesque city is the perfect destination for day trips to smaller local villages and well-known tourist hotspots along the coast. A foodie's heaven, Michelin starred restaurants with set menus sit alongside budget-friendly eateries in the bustling city centre. Plus, foodies can dig into a bizarre "fry up sandwich" that boasts as many calories as three pizzas. Plus, there's the world's most beautiful McDonald's to check out too.
Overlooking golden sandy beaches, Porto has plenty to offer. Savour its rich culinary traditions in various restaurants and browse through classy boutiques in the city centre. Wine lovers must visit the Symington Family Estate, leading producers of port and wine, and owners of a vast vineyard in the Douro Valley.
The city's architecture is famed for its beauty, with highlights including Bridge D Luiz I, Clerigos Tower, Saint Francis Church and the colourful houses on the Ribeira's river front. There's also a bunch of museums and free stuff to do if you fancy learning about the city's history that goes back hundreds of years.
