Ireland: Police to be given whatever they require after M9 crash

The funeral notice posted for one of the teenagers killed in the head-on M9 crash has been taken down following abusive comments.

Five teenagers were killed and a family of four, including a seven year old boy, were seriously injured in the crash in Ireland on Sunday. The horrific collision happened when the teenagers drove a BMW on the wrong side of the motorway at speeds exceeding 74mph and smashed into the family's Hyundai, as they travelled to Dublin airport to catch a flight to the UK for a wedding.

Bereaved families posted tributes to the five teens, along with a funeral notice for Joe Carthy, 15, which has been taken down following a deluge of hostile and abusive comments appearing in its online condolences section, the Irish Mirror reports.

It is understood that the death notice on RIP.ie was withdrawn owing to an avalanche of negative and abusive remarks in the condolences section where individuals expressed their anger about the circumstances in which the group of teens drove the BMW the wrong way down the M9 motorway.

Gardai confirmed the vehicle was travelling in excess of 74mph on the wrong side of the rural motorway. Footage has surfaced captioned 'last spin boys' which purportedly shows the teens driving a BMW on a main road.

The other four teenagers who lost their lives, Kamil Pustkowski, 17, from Limerick; Jack Kennedy, 17, from Athy; Jeremy O'Brien, 18, from Carlow; and Alex McCarthy, 17, also from Carlow, are yet to have funeral notices published. Tributes have been paid to some members of the group.

The Irish Times has reported that RIP.ie, which is owned by The Irish Times Group, stated it does not comment on individual funeral notices.

Undertaker Joe Rigney, of Rigney's Funeral Directors, refused to comment on the removal of the notice, according to the Irish Times.

Garda also confirmed on Tuesday that they no longer believed the car had been stolen from Athy. Detectives revealed it had been legitimately purchased by an associate of the teenagers a week earlier for 1,100 (940).
