A settlement since Viking times on the banks of the River Mersey, Widnes was the birthplace of the chemical industry - now honoured by the Catalyst Museum - and is now home to around 60,000 people. Famed for its rugby league team Widnes Vikings and the iconic Silver Jubilee Bridge, a new Mersey Crossing is in the process of being built. Widnes has a thriving shopping and entertainment centre, while Widnes station was immortalised when Paul Simon wrote Homeward Bound there.
