A 'very serious collision' involving three lorries and a car has closed the M6 in North Staffordshire this morning. It has resulted in the motorway being closed off in both directions between junctions 15 and 16.
National Highways has confirmed the smash occurred at around 4.10am this morning on the northbound stretch. Staffordshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have all been scrambled to what has been described as 'very serious' collision.
Motorists are also being warned the northbound stretch could stay closed into the afternoon. Meanwhile the southbound carriageway has been shut to help emergency services access the scene of the smash.

Two lanes are shut on the northbound between junctions 16 and 17 following a vehicle fire.
Staffordshire Police has confirmed the man's next of kin are being supported by specialist officers. A force spokesperson said: "We were called to the M6 northbound between junctions 15 and 16 following reports of a collision involving three lorries and a car.
"The driver of the car, a man, sadly died at the scene. His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers.
"The driver of one of the lorries, a man, remains in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing at this time. We are appealing for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at the time to contact us."
Witnesses should call 101 and quote incident 86 of August 17.
Paramedics have confirmed a man has died following a crash on the M6 this morning. In addition one trucker was found in a 'serious condition', a second lorry driver had suffered 'potentially serious injuries', with the third able to be discharged at the scene.
West Midlands Ambulance Service sent three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic, the Trusts Hazardous Area Response Team and the Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car to the scene. Paramedics say nothing could be done to save the car driver.
A spokeswoman said: "On arrival a man, the driver of the car, was found in a critical condition. Sadly, it quickly became apparent, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
A second man, a driver of a HGV, was found in a serious condition, he received specialist trauma care before being conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital under emergency driving conditions. A third man, also a driver of a HGV, was treated for potentially serious injuries and conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital.
A fourth man, a HGV driver, was assessed, however sustained no injuries and was discharged at the scene."
There's been a collision northbound between junctions 13 and 14 where one lane has been shut.
Staffordshire Police's road crime team has warned the northbound side could stay shut until this evening. A spokesperson for the team said: "The M6 between Junction 15 and 16 northbound remains closed following a serious collision this morning. It is anticipated that the road will remain closed until this evening at the earliest due recovery operations.
"Please avoid the area and follow the diversions."
West Midlands Ambulance Service has confirmed it sent a number of resources to the scene. No further details on smash have been released.
A spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of an RTC on the M6 between junctions 15 and 16 in Butterton, Newcastle and sent three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic, the Trusts Hazardous Area Response Team and the Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car to the scene
There's been a collision on the northbound stretch between Junction 18 and 19.
Staffordshire Police has confirmed it is currently at the scene of a serious crash on the motorway. A spokesperson said: "Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible."
National Highways has confirmed the southbound carriageway is now back open.
There are now delays on the A50 westbound between Blurton and Sideway. Queues remain on the A500 near both the motorway junctions.
In addition Clayton Road through Westbury Park is gridlocked with queues between Dartmouth Avenue and the A500.
Newcastle Road in Talke is now busy too with traffic queuing back to Linley Road
Google Map is reporting a huge queue on the A500 following this morning's crash on the M6. The queue from Junction 16 is now back past Talke and heading to towards the Tunstall turning. It's also getting busy from Talke down to the Tunstall turning.
Down at Junction 15 and the queue is now back almost to Sideway
Traffic monitoring system Inrix has also confirmed the closure is in place across the northbound and southbound carriageways. It is reporting 'long delays' on the M6.

According to National Highways the 'northbound closure is likely to remain into this afternoon'.

The M6 in Staffordshire is closed in both directions between J15 Hanchurch Interchange (Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme A500) and J16 Barthomley Interchange (Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe, Nantwich, Chester A500).
