A man was taken to hospital following a garage fire on a North Staffordshire street. Emergency services had been called to the scene in Cross Heath.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say on arrival the garage on Reeves Avenue was 'well alight'. One man had also suffered smoke inhalation.

The alarm had been raised at 1.45pm on Saturday (August 15). A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "We were called to Reeves Avenue in Newcastle-under-Lyme following reports of a fire.

"Crews attended the scene and found a garage well alight. Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire and one man was taken to hospital for precautionary checks after suffering smoke inhalation.

"The cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental, by an electrical fault. Faulty electrical appliances cause around 7,000 fires every year. We are reminding people to replace all damaged cables, never overload sockets and make sure all electrical appliances have a British safety mark."
