Police have issued a warning following a series of major fires in Stoke-on-Trent.
Officers joined firefighters at the scene of a massive blaze in Sandyford yesterday (Thursday 13 August), resulting in numerous houses were evacuated. Six brave firefighters battled to contain the fires in sweltering heat and were taken to hospital following smoke inhalation and the effects of heat exhaustion.
Elsewhere, firefighters have also tackled numerous fires at Park Hall Country Park this week, including one yesterday and two on Tuesday. Crews were also called to a suspected deliberate grass fire at a field off Lordship Lane in Stoke at 8pm yesterday.
Inspector Rebecca Price, of the Stoke-on-Trent south local policing team, said: We have a number of ongoing investigations in relation to recent fires across the city. Starting fires deliberately can land you with a criminal record, which will stay with you for life and impact your future prospects.
I would reiterate that people need to be responsible and enjoy the outdoors safely this summer. People should avoid having barbeques in the countryside and if you are going to have one at home, do so responsibly and keep them away from vegetation. Please remember to take all your rubbish home and dispose of cigarettes properly as one spark can quickly escalate to a large fire."
