We're deprecating v1 on Wednesday, so we should be able to merge this then!

Before we can upgrade to ava 5.1.1, we need to bump our typescript version up to (at least) 4.7. See the breaking changes section of https://github.com/avajs/ava/releases/tag/v5.0.1. It's worth upgrading typescript, but that is a larger task that I may pick up later this week.
