Supporter Spotlight

Meet one of our incredible fundraisers

Jessica, a survivor of sexual violence, set herself a unique challenge to raise awareness and support our charity.

Jessica set a goal to raise raise 250 by doing The 12 Days of Cold Plunge.

She says: Until recently I've struggled with not feeling in my body or liking it due to all the trauma. One of the things that has helped me get to know and love my body again and push the shame and disgust I felt away is...wild swimming! It has been a game-changer for me.

From 25th December to 5th January, Jessica has been doing a cold plunge in the reservoir where the water temperature dropped to 1.8c raising a total of 2,517!

Inspiration

Meet an award-winning fundraiser

David raised an amazing 11,800 for our vital work by taking on a sponsored walk.

David took on a sponsored walk around the Cornish coast in memory of his daughter Emily, who was a victim of sexual violence.

The best part? "The kindness of the people we met along the way, and the many strangers who donated to our cause."

His advice to other fundraisers is to never be afraid to ask for donations and "leverage every source you can!"

David was nominated for JustGiving's Outstanding Commitment Award - and he won!

He received an incredible surprise from West Ham legends, Martin Allen and Jared Bowen.

Our top tips for fundraising success

Make a plan

Work backwards from the date of your event or challenge, and think about what you need to have organised or achieved each week in order to make it asuccess.

Create an online fundraising page and set a target

There are lots of platforms out there for this, but JustGiving and Facebook are two of the most familiar (see page 10 of our fundraising guide). And setting a fundraising target will help you to stay focused and encourage giving.

Think about accessibility at your event

Things to consider include parking, public transport links, wheelchair accessibility and having a chill-out room on site for anyone whos feeling overwhelmed.

Shout about what youredoing!

Wed recommend posting regularly about what youre doing on social media and asking everyone you know to spread the word. And remember: personal messages to loved ones will likely get you the most donations.

Find pre-prepared social media posts

Start selling tickets and promoting your event well inadvance

Online platforms like Eventbrite are free and easy to use for this, and can help you to reach a wider audience. Youll also find editable posters and social media posts below to help you promote your event.

Dont be afraid to ask for help including from your employer

Whether it's family and friends, colleagues or local businesses, youll probably be surprised at how many people are willing to lend a hand. And dont forget about your employer they might be able to share your online fundraiser, match donations or even let you host an event at the office.

Still got questions?

Send them over to fundraising@rapecrisis.org.uk and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

I cant quite believe Ive covered so much of the Earths curves on a bike, on my own. But I feel more proud of seeing how broken I was after being raped, and how whole I am now."
