Reason why Daniel Dubois was late for Usyk fight after dad's party and walking to Wembley

Daniel Dubois was late arriving to Wembley for the biggest night of his career after his dad held a party at the family home in the afternoon before Saturday's showdown with Oleksandr Usyk

Daniel Dubois arrived late to Wembley for the biggest fight of his career after his father threw a party at their family home on the afternoon before Saturday's clash with Oleksandr Usyk.

The Essex-based fighter was trying to rest ahead of the undisputed clash at Wembley Stadium while his father, Stan, entertained guests at their house. Dubois, 27, briefly left the house because he didn't recognise all of the attendees.

His father later drove him to Wembley after the private cars accredited to enter the vicinity of the national stadium were used to transport guests to the venue. This resulted in further delays to Dubois' arrival as the car they travelled in wasn't accredited, and he didn't reach the venue until 80 minutes before the scheduled ring walk time. Usyk had arrived an hour earlier.

According to The Times, Dubois had to walk to the stadium entrance on foot from the car park.

There was also chaos when some of the party guests tried to enter the venue, as footage surfaced on social media showing Dubois' entourage being refused entry by security, seeing the fighter caught up in the confusion.

It's claimed that Stan told security that Dubois would not proceed without them.

Dubois was defeated by Usyk in the fifth round of the fight, losing the IBF belt while the Ukrainian became a three-time undisputed champion.

Promoter Frank Warren has suggested that Dubois take a six-month break and learn about mental resilience from Usyk, who has handed him two career defeats.

After the fight, Warren said: "He has got to learn from it. He is only 27. I look at Frank Bruno for example, three times he fought for a world title and he got it on the fourth attempt.

Daniel Dubois arrived late at Wembley

"Daniel has won a world title so hopefully he will come back, but the bottom line is it was Usyk's night and he is a special, special boxer."

He added: "That is what Daniel needs to learn from this fight, to try and learn and develop the mental attitude that Usyk has. Daniel didn't stick to the task, he got careless, he dropped his hands and paid the price.

"For Daniel now, he'll have a little break, think about things and he has got to resurrect himself. There are lots of fighters over the years who have been beaten and come back even stronger. That is what he has to do.

"He can punch, he can hurt you and it's just developing other aspects of his game. He's got to come back and make a statement."

While the delay in reaching the venue hasn't been cited as a reason for Dubois' decisive loss to Usyk, it does highlight the odd relationship he shares with his father.

Some pundits, including heavyweight Dave Allen, have criticised Martin Bowers for giving ringside advice over head coach Don Charles during Daniel Dubois' fight. It was Charles who ultimately signalled the end by throwing in the towel as referee Michael Griffin stopped the bout when Dubois failed to beat the count.
