The Daily Star: News with a Wink

April 2025's biggest new game releases coming to PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC this month

After a packed March, there's still plenty of gaming to go around, with PlayStation and Xbox remasters and re-releases, an exciting new RPG, and Cristiano Ronaldo in a fighting game

Days Gone has been reanimated

We're struggling to think of a more explosive start to a gaming release calendar than 2025, which has already given us Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Civilization VII, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin's Creed Shadows, WWE 2K25 and much, much more.

While there's certainly an argument publishers are trying to clear GTA 6's "blast zone", the upshot is that a traditionally fallow first few months of the year has something for everyone.

April looks to continue that trend, too. Forza Horizon will come to PlayStation for the first time ever, while Days Gone is getting a remaster. There's also a very promising new RPG, a Microsoft exclusive, and a fighting game starring... Cristiano Ronaldo. Let's unpack.

The biggest gaming releases for April 2024:

Before we get started, we've not picked any Switch titles but for good reason the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement event is on April 2, so that's arguably the headline of the month.

South of Midnight (Released: April 8,Platforms: Xbox Series X and S, PC)

South of Midnight looks absolutely gorgeous in motion

The latest title in a string of big Xbox games slated for this year from Microsoft, South of Midnight is from the team behind We Happy Few. It's set in the Deep South, weaving a narrative across folklore and family matters.

The developers at Compulsion Games have worked to make the whole think look a little like stop motion (at least in cutscenes), adding a unique texture to each scene.

Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves (Released:April 21,Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PC)

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves looks promising

The first entry in the Fatal Fury series in 26 years, City of the Wolves is certainly grabbing the attention of even more casual fans.

That's because not only does it look like a beautiful, cartoonish fighting game in its own right, but there are some surprising guest characters. Ken and Chun-Li from Street Fighter is one thing, but the chance to go toe-to-toe with Cristiano Ronaldo? Priceless.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (Released:April 24,Platforms:PS5,Xbox Series X and S, PC)

Expedition 33 has a great narrative premise

A real "surprise package", Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could be one of the most anticipated games in 2025. A new turn-based RPG set in a world where a mysterious 'Painter' can snuff out everyone of a certain age when she paints that number.

She's about to paint the number 33, hence the title, and the intriguing premise is backed by a voice cast including Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings), Jennifer English (Baldur's Gate 3) and Kirsty Rider (Sandman).

Days Gone Remastered (Released:April 25,Platforms:PS5, PC)

Time to get back on the bike

The PS4 has a whole host of exclusives that Sony has brought to PS5 and PC in recent years, and Days Gone Remastered is the next one on the docket.

It's an open-world title packed with ravenous 'Freakers' (read: zombies), where you play as a motorcycle gang member looking to survive. Having never picked it up before, I'll be giving it a go!

Forza Horizon 5 (Released:April 29,Platforms:PS5)

Forza Horizon 5 might actually look even better on PS5

Sure, it's already out for Xbox and PC owners, but Forza Horizon 5 is careening onto PlayStation 5. The game, which originally launched at the end of 2021, is one of the highest-rated Microsoft exclusives for good reason.

It's even getting PS5 Pro enhancements, which could make the PS5 version of the open-world racing game the definitive one.
