13 amazing photographs of a 1970s afternoon in the George and Dragon in Longton

A typical afternoon in a Stoke-on-Trent pub in the early 1970s was captured on film when a photographer called in. Paul Sherratt, who took pictures professionally for 40 years, went into the George and Dragon in Longton at random with his camera on Saturday afternoon.

Tunstall-born Paul, who was in his 20s at the time, regularly caught the bus around the city to photograph and record 1970s life in the Potteries. Now he's shared a set of 13 images from the Heathcote Road pub with StokeonTrentLive - and it's a fascinating look at times gone by.

Paul, who lives in Talke, said he was hoping people might recognise relatives in the photographs, which capture 'a moment in time'.

The 71-year-old, who grew up in May Bank, said: "I just wandered in there one Saturday. I didn't plan it, and there was no particular reason why I chose it. I used to just get on the bus, go somewhere and take pictures.

"The door was probably open and I must have asked if I could take pictures in there, and in those days, people didn't get defensive about it. It was a different time - you can see it in their clothes and the smoking.

"I have been wondering whether anyone will recognise a relative in the pictures. I never saw the point of photographing buildings - I was always interested in the people. I like the nostalgia and the little details. It's just a moment in time."
