Summary

A Tapo P300(EU) power strip on firmware 1.0.7 Build 220715 Rel.200458 (SMART.TAPOPLUG, AES, login_version 2) cannot be updated: handshake and login succeed, the first multipleRequest batch succeeds, and the next batch never gets a response. This PR fixes the two library issues that together make that fatal.

1. Builtin TimeoutError from aiohttp is not mapped to kasa's TimeoutError

#1273 rewrote except (aiohttp.ServerTimeoutError, asyncio.TimeoutError) to except (aiohttp.ServerTimeoutError, TimeoutError) in kasa/httpclient.py. That module imports TimeoutError from kasa.exceptions, which shadows the builtin, so the clause no longer catches the builtin TimeoutError that aiohttp raises when ClientTimeout(total=...) expires after the connection is established. Those timeouts fall through to the generic handler and surface as a non-retryable KasaException("Unable to query the device: <host>: ", TimeoutError()), so SmartProtocol._query never retries them.

Verified with aiohttp 3.14.1 / Python 3.12 against a local server that accepts a request and never answers: the raised exception is builtins.TimeoutError, not an instance of kasa.exceptions.TimeoutError or aiohttp.ServerTimeoutError. The existing test_httpclient_errors case uses kasa's TimeoutError, so it did not catch this; a builtin case is added.

2. No single-request fallback when a batched request times out

The P300 firmware never answers a multipleRequest containing both get_child_device_component_list and get_child_device_list. Measured against two devices:

request result
get_child_device_list alone OK, 0.2 s, 3 children
get_child_device_component_list alone OK, 0.0 s
both in one multipleRequest no response (timeout)
full update() with _multi_request_batch_size = 1 OK, 0.3–0.6 s

_execute_multiple_query only disables batching on JSON_DECODE_FAIL_ERROR / INTERNAL_UNKNOWN_ERROR (#1025). This PR applies the same pattern to a TimeoutError raised while sending a batch: set the batch size to 1 and raise _RetryableError.

Behaviour changes to be aware of

  1. A transient timeout on a batched request now also drops that protocol instance to single requests, as the existing JSON-decode fallback does.
  2. Because timeouts are retryable again, a device that is genuinely unreachable mid-request now fails after retry_count + 1 timeouts rather than after the first one. This is the behaviour _query's TimeoutError handler was written for.

I considered adding the two child-list methods to FORCE_SINGLE_REQUEST instead. I did not, because that set is documented for requests that do not return the method key, and it would add a request for every strip and hub to work around one firmware. If you would prefer this handled as a narrower or opt-in quirk, I am happy to rework it.

Testing

  1. New tests: test_smart_device_multiple_request_timeout, test_smart_device_multiple_request_timeout_single_requests, test_smart_device_multiple_request_child_lists_timeout (models the P300 behaviour), plus a BuiltinTimeoutError case in test_httpclient_errors. Four of these fail on master and pass with this change.
  2. uv run pytest: 22748 passed, 880 skipped, 4 failed. The four failures are timezone tests (tests/iot/test_iottimezone.py ×3, tests/test_device.py::test_device_timezones) that fail identically on an untouched master checkout in my environment.
  3. pre-commit run on the changed files: all hooks pass, including ruff, ruff-format and mypy.
  4. Real devices (two P300(EU), fw 1.0.7), read-only, Discover.discover_single + update() with the default batch size:
master this branch
request timeout 10 s KasaException ... TimeoutError() after ~10.5 s OK, ~11.7 s, 3 children
request timeout 5 s, first update() — OK, ~6.5 s
request timeout 5 s, next update() — OK, 0.1–0.3 s

A fixture for P300(EU)_1.0_1.0.7 already exists, so none is added.

This PR was prepared with the help of an AI coding assistant (Claude). I reviewed the change, and the device measurements above were taken against my own hardware.

KaloyanNaumov and others added 2 commits September 13, 2026 21:04
python-kasa#1273 rewrote `asyncio.TimeoutError` to `TimeoutError` in httpclient.py,
but the module imports `TimeoutError` from kasa.exceptions, which shadows
the builtin. aiohttp raises the builtin TimeoutError when
`ClientTimeout(total=...)` expires after the connection is established,
so those timeouts fell through to the generic handler and were raised as
a non-retryable KasaException instead of kasa's TimeoutError.

The P300(EU) on firmware 1.0.7 never answers a multipleRequest that
contains both get_child_device_component_list and get_child_device_list,
while each request sent on its own succeeds. The existing fallback to
single requests only triggers on JSON_DECODE_FAIL_ERROR and
INTERNAL_UNKNOWN_ERROR, so the device could not be updated.

Treat a timeout on a batched request the same way: disable batching and
retry.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • ❄️ Test Analytics: Detect flaky tests, report on failures, and find test suite problems.

The batched request loop only runs when the batch size is not 1, as a
batch size of 1 sends single requests and returns earlier, so the
`batch size != 1` check and the re-raise were dead code and left
uncovered.

Thanks for the PR, @KaloyanNaumov. The change sounds reasonable, so I just merge it as-is to continue release preparations.

# P300 does not respond to some batched requests (e.g. both child
# list requests together) so disable batching. Batch size is never
# 1 here as that case sends single requests above.

I don't think this is P300 specific, so I wanted to cleanup the comment. Alas, I could not push to your branch.

I am merging this now to get it into the next release I am preparing.

## [0.11.0](https://github.com/python-kasa/python-kasa/tree/0.11.0)
(2026-10-04)

[Full
Changelog](0.10.2...0.11.0)

**Release summary:**

This is a huge and long overdue release, coming more than a year and a
half after the previous one.
Hopefully the next one follows sooner, as the TPAP transport (which did
not make it into this release) is used more and more on newer devices.

This release brings broader camera support, new modules for lights,
vacuums and cameras, and many connectivity fixes for newer firmware
versions. Some other highlights:
- Improved Tapo camera support: login version 3, presets, wifi handling,
last alert detection, and more robust authentication and discovery.
- Selective room cleaning for robot vacuums.
- Configurable light strip length via the new strip segment module, and
an exposed light transition state change flag.
- Basic HomeKit module for Kasa (iot) devices.
- Energy monitoring V2 support (S515D).
- Better hub and thermostat state reporting (hold, summer mode, low
battery).
- Connection fixes for newer Tapo firmware and older SSL devices, plus
KLAP v2 for iot devices.
- More resilient time handling, with failover and UTC fallback for iot
devices.
- Python 3.14 is now supported.
- Inclusion of fixtures for 29 devices or firmware versions, including
the Tapo C460, C200 and C101 cameras and the KH100 hub with KE100/KE110
thermostats.
